Maury Kapsner’s life has been one of a man searching for the Truth about Jesus
Christ. He grew up around the church since he was a small boy, but never felt the
peace of knowing his eternity was secure in Jesus Christ. He served in the military,
married his high school sweetheart, Linda, had two sons, John and Peter, and experienced
success in the workplace. Still something was not right. Finally, through other
life experiences, the word of God became clear to Maury, and he opened his heart
and his life to Jesus Christ.
After years of following Christ, at the age of 60, Maury Kapsner came to a crossroads
in his life: “should I begin to prepare for retirement or should I refire
for Jesus!” “Refirement” became the choice, which led him to Burundi
in East Central Africa. Burundi has been involved in Civil War on and off since
1964 when they gained independence from Belgium. The climax of this strife culminated
with the Genocide of 1993-94 where nearly 400,000 men, women and children were massacred.
The ministry began with a humanitarian project in 2003 to an orphanage in Kiremba
in the Southern part of Burundi. During an International Conference in AZ, Pastor
Elie and Sofanie from the Kiremba Pentecostal Church met with Maury and Linda Kapsner
and their friends, Gary and Gretchen Buckmiller, and at the meeting they requested
assistance with Bible Study material. Maury, being a Teacher Director for Community
Bible Study sensed that this was a call to work with the International Ministry
of CBS (CBSI) and make the study guides that CBS uses available for use in Burundi.
Since then, CBSI has arranged for the translation and publishing of a 30 week study
for the Book of Acts and Matthew, with the Book of Romans in process. Throughout
the past three years, Maury has taken six trips to Burundi, training over 200 leaders
and pastors who then have started more than 400 classes across the southern half
of Burundi. This has also caused the ministry to spread to other countries in the
region.
Maury looks forward with earnest to what God is doing and will continue to do through
CBSI in Central-Eastern and Northern Africa.
